#5 A Roman Holiday With Sali e Tabacchi
Follia Creatrice is coming to the Capital and homeboy Valerio Carocci shares his favorite haunts in the Eternal City.
Within the space of the late 19th century Palazzo Brancaccio, we will celebrate the Roman launch of RIV.02: Follia Creatrice tomorrow. We are excited to meet the local community and explore creative folly, a theme more relevant than ever in a city whose legacy is defined by some of the most erratically genius personalities in history. Join us at Contemporary Cluster, 4th December, from 6 pm onwards, presented in association with Frab’s.
24 Hours in Rome with Valerio Carocci
Valerio Carocci is the founder of Piccolo Cinema America, an initiative of cinema screenings across the city of Rome that brings together filmmakers, actors, leaders, and the people with film as a common platform. Using cinema as a cultural outreach for the community, Carocci's dedication and dynamism have made him and the association an influential and crucial voice in the social and political landscape of the city. Ahead of our weekend in Rome, he shares his favorite home city spots.
Bar San Calisto
It's a magical place in the city where time seemed to have stood still somewhere between the 80s and the 90s. There are the Trastevere locals that play cards while soaking in the sun and the homeless that come for the 1€ ice-cream and coffee-flavored granita made by the owner Marcellino - treats that are equally well-enjoyed by the students of Virgilio, directors, and actors. A family-run affair, while the rest of the Trastevere locales have since been sold and turned into touristic restaurants, stripped of their Roman identity, this is a happy island that has remained and continues to illuminate the Rione.
Chiostro dell'Ospedale Regina Margherita di Trastevere
Often unknown even to those who live on the Trastevere, one of the most romantic spots of Rome is inside this hospital. Beautiful flowers, frescoes, benches to sit on and read, where everything comes to a standstill while the city and the Rione continue in movement. Once, I came here to read, and I casually ended up (not joking) confessing my feelings to a girl (who turned me down). It's a place I often visit to think. If one wants to see the Trastevere, this upside-down spot is a must, as I quote Stranger Things.
Donna Camilla on Via Garibaldi
Work ties me to this remarkable hotel. It's where we host international cinematic personalities that take part in our open-air screenings. Here were my first ever encounters with Paul Schrader, Jeremy Irons, Asghar Farhadi, Debra Winger, and many others, including Mathieu Kassovitz, who came to Rome for three summers in a row and have since become one of our closest friends. The breakfast here is fantastic and open to all, served in a beautiful internal garden.
Cambio
When I think of home, I think of Cambio, of Franco and Fabio and their staff, of their incredible live music, of the exceptional menu and the sense of calm from being within the walls of the locale, with the best Italian olive oil and dishes that whet an insatiable appetite. The writer Michela Murgia was the one who introduced me to this place, and I've never been able to do without it since.
See you all in Rome, and don’t forget to compliment Marcellino for the granita al caffè!
